Summer Dance Plans and Celebrations to Make Time to Dance

Summer is the perfect season to embrace movement, creativity, and community through dance. As the competition season winds down and the warmth of longer days invites us outdoors, dance studios and performers shift gears to celebrate, showcase, and connect. This summer, my dance calendar is packed with exciting events, family traditions, and new opportunities to keep the rhythm alive. I want to share my plans and hear about yours because no matter what style or level, it’s essential to make time to dance.

Preparing for Annual Showcases
Every year, local dance studios dedicate months to preparing for their annual showcases. This year is no different. My studio has been busy rehearsing multiple dance numbers for two big events: one in June and another in July. These showcases are a chance for dancers of all ages and skill levels to perform in front of an audience, celebrate their progress, and share their passion.
The process involves:
Intensive rehearsals focusing on technique, timing, and expression
Costume fittings to bring each dance’s theme to life
Stage rehearsals to get comfortable with lighting and spacing
These showcases mark a transition from the competitive season to a more celebratory and community-focused part of the year. They also help dancers build confidence and stage presence, which are valuable skills for any performance.
Family Traditions That Inspire Dance
One of my favorite ways to kick off summer is a family tradition that has been going strong for years. Every year, my family and I travel to Berkeley to watch the Morris Dancers perform at sunrise. This centuries-old English folk dance is lively, rhythmic, and full of history. Watching the dancers greet the sun with their energetic steps and colorful costumes is a magical experience that sets a joyful tone for the season.
This tradition reminds me how dance connects us to culture, nature, and each other. It’s a moment to pause, appreciate the art form’s roots, and feel inspired for the months ahead.
Celebrating World Dance Day
World Dance Day falls on April 29, 2026, and it’s a global celebration of dance as a universal language. This year, I’m excited to see how dancers in our community will mark the occasion. My daughter’s dance team will perform at two local festivals in May, which feels like a perfect lead-up to the day.
If you’re wondering how to celebrate, here are some ideas:
Attend or organize a dance event or flash mob
Share your favorite dance videos or stories online
Try a new dance style or take a workshop
Connect with other dancers to share your passion
World Dance Day is a reminder that dance belongs to everyone and that making time to dance enriches our lives in countless ways.
Summer Sessions and Online Classes
Starting in early June, my studio will launch summer sessions that run both in-person and online. These sessions offer flexibility for dancers who want to keep improving their skills, try new styles, or simply stay active during the summer break.
Highlights include:
Classes for all ages and levels, from beginner to advanced
Styles ranging from ballet and jazz to hip-hop and contemporary
Opportunities to prepare for fall competitions or performances
Online classes are especially helpful for dancers who travel or have busy summer schedules. They allow us to stay connected and keep dancing no matter where we are.
Local Parades and Summer Intensives
Summer is also a popular time for parades and intensive dance programs. Many dancers participate in local parades, showcasing their talents to the community and enjoying the festive atmosphere. If you or your dance group are planning to perform in a parade, it’s a great way to gain experience and share your love of dance with a wider audience.
Summer intensives offer focused training over a few weeks, often with guest instructors and specialized workshops. These programs can deepen technique, introduce new choreography, and build friendships with dancers from other studios.
If you’re enrolling in an intensive this summer, consider:
Setting clear goals for what you want to achieve
Balancing rest and practice to avoid burnout
Documenting your progress with photos and videos
Traveling and Capturing Dance Moments
This summer, my family and I have several trips planned, and dance will be part of the journey. We’ll be taking videos and photos to capture performances, rehearsals, and spontaneous dance moments. Sharing these glimpses of our dance life helps inspire others and keeps the community connected.
Whether you’re traveling for a competition, workshop, or just a family vacation, try to find moments to dance. It could be a morning stretch on the beach, a dance party in the hotel room, or a visit to a local dance event.
