Why we Dance

Dance Magazine features an excellent article with Jacqulin Harris from Ailey Dance, discussing how dance has always been instinctive for her. It prompted me to reflect on why we choose to dance and become dancers ourselves. Take a moment to truly consider why you dance. We often hear that we don't dance just because we want to, but because we need to. In this sense, it is essential to our wholeness, like an instinct. We don't think about it; we simply do it. Once we enter the world of dance, it influences many of our life decisions. A common saying in the dance community is, "once a dancer, always a dancer." Although life may bring many changes or take our plans in various unexpected directions, we always find a way to keep dancing or return to it.
The article mentions, "As a young child, my mother enrolled me in dance class along with my three older sisters, likely to create some peace in her life. Little did she know she was creating a space for a shy, seemingly invisible child to be herself without fear." Perhaps dance gives you confidence too. Perhaps it grants you a different gift. Dance is a form of expression that allows us to communicate beyond words. It translates emotions or stories through movement and motion. Whatever the reason you began this artistic journey, we welcome you. Take and make time to develop your art and craft. Continue to make time to dance and move. Let everything and anything inspire you. Connect with who you are. Dance.
